ben, i think its a classically beautiful image. i would have liked a bit more room on the left though and perhaps a polariser would have helped you a little on the sky.

Nicely done HDR.

I would however think about fixing the dark area lower right as it's not consistent with the light...ie it should be brighter.

Thanks for the feedback. I see what you mean about the dark area... I will work on that, it is quite challenging to lighten that area up without bringing in the blown out highlights. Here is another of the same lighthouse, different composition.

here is another version of the first photo with the dark areas lightened up. Do you think it is better now... I think it is.

Somewhat improved I think. On the other hand, slightly (or very) blown highlights are something one could accept at times.

Did you miss the 'sunrise' or the cloud-show before the sun came up? I think that could have been very promising.

Yep.... Unfortunately I underestimated how long it would take me to get there and was about 10 minutes later than I would have liked and then had an 800mtr sprint. Good guess... I have got some shot with the sun lower but It wasn't that great a sunrise anyway... I will definitely go back here. Good location.

If you had more space to the left you could have corrected the vertical perspective which I suspect would make a significant improvement. Easy in Photoshop, very easy in Lightroom. While you could still do it on the image as it is, the lighthouse would end up even closer to the border.

I quite like the first picture as it is.
And I acknowledge that the comments
and suggestions above are valid, but
in my view the converging lines are
part of the perspective and this has
its own attraction.
