Another early morning, another photo opportunity...

Back to Hornby Lighthouse which is at the tip of South Head of Sydney Harbour - right out on the end past HMAS Watson.

It's a very pretty location and this time it wasn't threatening to rain with 100% overcast skies. We didn't get a lot of colour with sunrise but twilight was quite pretty with soft purples and blues and for those who waited till well after sunrise we were greeted with second chance God rays on the horizon for quite some time.

For those who would like to visit the best place to park is the car park at the end of Cliff street at Camp Cove, you then walk out onto the beach and up the stairs at the end and just follow the path around to the lighthouse (about a ten to fifteen minute walk).

I really like the first - the tones, the composition are excellent.

The POV seems like you are taking the photo from mid-air!

#1 is great....I love the slow shutter action!

I am not certain about the sliver of red in the last though...not quite enough there for me so I would be tempted to crop it out.

Thanks Trevor - yep thats that jump off the cliff and have 2 mins hangtime and then drop technique - works pretty well I reckon

I'm assuming by sliver you mean the red wall of the lighthouse on the left? I have others with more of it and with slightly different positions and views (I was trying to show the left and right sides of the sort of spiraling to the left rock area in front of me).

Here is an earlier one which was a bit more forward and swivelled way more to the right (so the red wall is almost behind me) and then flipped horizontally so the leadin works the right way - with all of these types of ones I'm not sure if theres just too much foreground?



and here is the more daytime version of a scene similar to #1 (but including my beloved foreground interest plant at the bottom left corner )

So for what it's worth here are my thoughts.

#1 i would crop the left closer to the lighthouse to remove the foreground rock and increase the sense of the lighthouse looking right out to sea

#2 I would crop from the bottom to intersect with the corner of the top foreground rock. That way you retain some sense of the foreground you are going for but remove (what i think) is not really adding to the composition.

#3 i would probably crop hard left, removing the lighthouse altogether, leaving the rest to speak for itself.

Thanks Mj - I hadn't even considered that - I'll take a look and see how it looks

Yep - I've been getting a lot of square crop suggestions for #2

Love the tones in the first one. Crop the lower portion a bit more and you have a spectacular image to be printed large and hung

Superb photographical rendition of an amazing vista. I like all these images. Definitely worth an early morning trek.

mmm... not really doing it for me... I think there is a lack of subject with this shot... what is the image actually all about? Sorry... I think the composition is just not there

I'd dress up the first image and be happy !!!
