My macro lens (Zeiss 100mm f2) has a 1:2 ratio so I'm not likely to do any bugs eyes, etc.

But I had a crack at a red rose just for the fun of it.

What appealed to me Murray was the ability of the camera to handle the reds.

I expect I'll get one but I don't have an actual need for it for a while. Lloyd Chambers says the D800 can take more sharpening which erodes the difference between it and the E. Thom Hogan says the E's greatest advantage is wide open which is counter-intuitive. Not sure which I'll get. Perhaps it doesn't matter.

But your image just started me thinking. Flowers are well known for their gamut-challenging colours and the same applies to live music. For live music, the obvious choice would be my D3s. But with some lighting setups, where the light is dominant red or blue, it can be difficult to get good tonality. So it might be an interesting test to use a D800, scale it back to 12MP and see what difference the extra two stops of dynamic range makes.

Agreed. I've been subscribing to Lloyd Chambers for a few years now. The photography that I tend to do lends itself to the E but as you say there's little in it. The camera requires a little more care of technique due to the pixel pitch as opposed to my previous camera - the D3.

a challenge and few cameras are capable (the
ones I have) to capture a credible red.
