I have not played with the R1C1 in a while so went on a hunt in the garden for some bugs. Not too many about yet but managed a few of this ant. All have been cropped somewhat, the disadvantage of FX. I dont like using the D300 after using the D700!

Nice stuff there Geoff...I still find myself turning to the D300 for certain things.....I was just macro-ing with it the other day. Yes the D700 makes the D300 feel a bit meh.

Geoff
What lens?

I really want to like #2, but just wish the ant was backed by the blackness instead of the purple flower which detracts from the leap off the leaf a little for me. #3 is a cracker.

Thanks Cam. I have only used the D300 perhaps 3 or 4 times since getting it and the D700. Will be good as a back up body and for the perceived longer reach.

Peter, thanks for your comments. This was the only ant I saw today while stalking. It was such a job to track it, get it in frame, focus and get anything worthwhile!

Lens I used the 105 VR Micro.

The bright BG in teh first two is quite distracting, i gotta say that bokeh is not as smooth as one would expect, that could just be the BG subject though. The ants do feel a bit small in teh frame, maybe a extra crop is in order just to nail the main subject to the viewer?

I assume you can dial down individual flashes with that RC kit, maybe dial down one to get some more depth to the lighting, the overall lighting is quite bright and uniform (from all angles and very little shadow) which makes it all look a bit flat. Getting some shadow in there would help I think.
