The Gallery, The Writer and The Resturant

I went into Brisbane CBD yesterday with the X-E1. Some strange things happening with Auto ISO settings, a little erratic perhaps? I had the camera set to AUTO 6400 (because you can :D ) and shooting in AE mode. I can understand the settings used for 'The Gallery' and 'The Writer' but 'The Restaurant' settings seem strange. I would have thought that the shutter speed would go much lower before pushing the ISO up to 800?

I cant find in the Fuji menu, where the user can specify the minimum shutter speed before the ISO is pushed, as you can with the Nikon system.

The Gallery (55mm, 1/30s, f4, ISO 1000)

The Writer (18mm, 1/30s, f3.2, ISO 2500)

The Restaurant (21.4mm, 1/480s, f3.2, ISO800)

love the first 2 geoff. they are fantastic !

as for the iso setting; unfortuantely this is a fuji issue. erratic is too nice a word, its bloody retarded. and there is no ability to set a minimum shutter speed for auto iso either.
my workaround is that i shoot in manual with auto iso on. its far more reliable like that but you just have to be careful about changing conditions. aternately, i shoot with it it shutter priority and again, it seems to be more logical than in aperture priority which was all over the place.

Thanks Chris.

Maybe a firmware update will address the short sighted ISO issue? There was supposed to be a firmware update released in the the past few days, but it never happened.

I read somewhere it was unlikely to be addressed via firmware as it would need to be a new menu option as opposed to tweaking an existing setting. Don't know how true that is. I have yet to read any reviews of whether the x100s has the minimum shutter option.

I also don't like the fact you can't assign the function button to metering. That is again a very shortsighted and illogical decision.

Despite your problems with the auto ISO....these images are as fine as any I have seen from a DSLR....and this from a small body camera. The camera and the lens have delivered IQ that is good enough to meet most professional needs. The Fuji is a damned fine camera.

:agree: but it could do with a closer crop

I'm going to go the other way.

Writing is often a lonely task, and often done by one person, on their own. A wider viewpoint might help to emphasise this aspect.

I did try other tighter crops following the suggestions, but I am not happy with the outcome and prefer the image 'as is'. Thanks for the comments and thoughts though.

I'm liking the writer best of these. Captures the detachment and involvement nicely.

Auto ISO might be fixed, or might not. It's a bit strange because the X100 has the adjustable settings but they left it off the interchangeable lens cameras. Pretty sure they would announce it as a feature, so I'd guess it isn't in the upcoming firmware, which is apparently delayed because of a sensor artefact at 27-30mm on the zoom. There's a thread at that horrible place about it.

Re AutoIso on the X100S, it appears to retain the minimum shutter speed selection. Shown on the Fujiguys X100S preview Video at about 7 minutes.

A tighter crop on the writer would lose all context... please leave it as is.

There are a number of issues I find with the current crop of Fuji CSC's some of which will clearly be fixed in the next generation (based on what they are providing with the x100s and x20 I would expect the x-e2 will be better sorted).
Don't expect them to deal with this with firmware improvements... it's more likely to be used to drive us all toward upgrade.

In the meantime I intend to enjoy my x-e1 for what it it is... and for the most part use it fully manual and suffer the AF as is when I fall back to using it.

Congratulations on POTW! Well deserved. However...after looking at the image for awhile I believe the it needs to be cropped to remove the light on the right hand side, which detracts from the main subject. That, anyway, is my opinion. :D

Thanks Matt. OK here is a crop based on your suggestion, whats the general consensus now? Better, worse or indifferent?

Too much of a heavy crop for me, prefer the original. Perhaps crop just inside the light.

I would have traded some of what you have cropped off the bottom for some of the space up top. At the moment the truncation of her legs is annoying

A bit too much crop. Try just cutting out that right hand light but leave the rest.

I wanted to keep the same aspect ratio. Personally, and as already stated, I still prefer the crop of the originally posted version but It's good to explore the alternatives.
