May as well be hung for a sheep as a turtle

These shots were taken at Byron Bay with a D-70 in an Ikelite Housing a couple of weeks ago. Manual exposures, RAW 12-24 Nikkor, twin Ikelite DS-125 strobes on 1/4 power.

These females were engaged in a full on territorial battle.

did you ever have any problems with white balaning under water?

These are well done as well, Steve. The first one is quite interesting, with the differing elements vying for attention. I'd suggest a crop of the dead space on the right, but other than that, both are very good, IMO. :)

Wow, those are amazing shots. I've seen that Ikelite houseing - belonging to pluckaduck, but these are among the first truly breathtaking underwater shots from the D70.

Do the strobes scare the creatures at all? Sometimes people are annoyed by flash strobe, I can't imagine how animals would respond to them, as it doesn't mimic anything in their natural environment...

White Balance

White balance is a pain underwater. Sometimes I set a manual level off a grey piece of plastic but I am tending to just correct the RAW images in photoshop now.

The cameras daylight setting is pretty close for macro work with the strobes that I have but anymore than a metre away and the dreaded blue green cast sets in.

The following 2 pix show the difference that colour balance and a 1 stop exposure correction can make.

The critter is a blue spotted stingray.

Wow, that is amazing that they are both the same picture. Fantastic comparison and I really look forward to more underwater pics.

THere is some visible dust on the first one right in the middle. I also agree with the crop.

I'm really jealous, I'd love an underwater housing.

G'day Steve,
Wow, these are fantastic. I haven't seen much underwater stuff but these immediately impressed me, especially the first with the diver to give a perspective of size... I'd love to see some more!

Thanks for sharing...

Cheers.
