With all the bigstopper action that has been around I decide to get one a few months ago and give it a try when I went away recently on a cruise. A clear sunrise on the last day of the cruise with the ship at sea steaming west gave me the opportunity to try it out somewhat differently to the normal seascape. This is the result of the long exposure from a moving platform. What do you think?

Interesting effect on the water and I like that ripple effect - the boat parts are sharp (as they probably should be) which is good. I reckon there's way too much sky - maybe a pano crop a bit above the horizon and the low clouds (which would also get rid of that funky part of the sky top left)

Thanks Rodney. I was concerned the vibrations of the ship engines would create blur on the rails but it did not, I think the ripple effect was the result of the ship moving through the slight swell. I will give a pano crop a try.

Now THIS is an interesting image! The composition is wonderful...like 3 musical notes in perfect harmony. The sense of space created by the very small sun, the horizon...not placed to comply with the rule of thirds, but almost precisely halfway up the image space...the thingamajig on the right...not thankfully lined up with the horizon but placed slightly off the 'sweet spot' to lead the eye to the sun.
There is much to like about this wonderful image and it is the placement of the pictorial elements being put exactly where they balance the image so that they 'dangle like a burr of light on a razors edge'. The quote, I think from was Blaise Cendrars or perhaps it was Andre Gide. And I like the simplicity of the image. Space in an image is like silence in a musical piece. It has a role.

Matt you have a way with words. When I took the shot I was not thinking of rules, either broken or maintained, but simply sat my bum on the deck (to be around chair tripod height) looked at the scene and said to myself "that looks ok". Although I did think about the position of the wake, vertical thingy and the sun.
