Agreed on the first part, but I can imagine that this is an image for which colour will not add anything. Of course, there is a slim chance I could be wrong, but we know that is unlikely.

My calculations indicate that cropping from the right and top would increase cutreness according to the inverse square law.

ahh but, thou shalt increase the attention to the dead space on the bottom left, better to distract the viewer momentarily than bore them with concrete

I agree with Surenj. Crop unnecessary space and
place your subject on one of the two thirds to
give the picture added interest. I don't believe
colour will add; probably it will divert the attention
if there is strong colours surrounding the main subject.
You also caught a very pleasant expression. On the
whole I think it is a very good candid portrait.
