The evil drink

While walking the streets a cold morning, I saw the man seating on the floor
against a wall totally oblivious of the world around him and a carton of cheap
wine by his side. He was in no condition to be asked so I took the picture and
moved on asking myself what sort of circumstances has led this man to this
situation.

A fabulous candid but at the same time a sad indictment on our society.

Hope the Brisbane winter, global worming and especially that wine, kept him warm. Poor soul.

Thank you for your comments. The picture was taken in
Madrid (Spain) in April 2011, so it was still coolish. I'm
assuming the social situation in Europe is even worse today.
In difficult economic situations governments normally
make saving by cutting pensions, salaries, jobs and the social
support systems of those who need them most.

I am yet to find a government, who starts making savings
at the top by reducing their own salaries and working conditions
and those of the bankers and industrialists.

I hope that this picture brings the compassion in us to our
fellow beings, wherever they are.

Great image Zafra which can't help but invoke compassion. Interestingly the disease of alcoholism isn't always the result of circumstances but can be the cause of unfortunate circumstances. One of my neighbours ( I live in an ordinary Sydney suburb) is regularly viewed starting the day from the 4 litre carton and sometimes walks past me in the afternoon without recognising me. He only works part time occasionally and if not for the fact his wife is in full time work I am sure he would be living similar to the subject of your photo.
