I suppose one really has to get the whole Qantas thing in perspective. The days of free lunches are over, (written as a former employee of Australian Airlines (TN), a once truly great airline, unfortunately swallowed up by the QF behemoth). Airlines have perfected the art of losing money, and Qantas is doing really well at this. Virgin is also losing lots of money. I don't think Joyce has many friends inside or outside the airline; his days may well be numbered. It is particularly sad that James Strong is no longer with us. He was an exceptional CEO and well liked during his time at TN. He was one who maybe could have turned the ship into profitability?
What next for Qantas? I suspect the airline will be mostly sold to overseas interests. Maintenance will be mostly carried out in Asia. Staff will be imported at cheap rates of pay. The business
model will need to be changed to compete with the Singapore Airlines of the world. Interesting and stormy days await the flying kangaroo.
