I snapped this as it flew over the house and am wondering what the side attachment is for? Carrying long items or some other reason?

They've just left Macca's, and that's their new pitot tube. Supersized.

Matt, put your tin foil hat on.
Seriously, its just a survey aircraft, the pod on the side simply holds a whole bunch of cameras and sensors, its probably the nearmap one, i think they operate a cessna 210.. do a search for vh-tkq.

one interesting point here is the lack of registration mark on the lower side of the wing, minimum requirements stipulate the rego mark to be on the lower surface of the port wing (or both wings).... see casr 45.045
this is for the obvious point of being able to recognise aircraft from the ground.. lol

The answer has been put forward by Gerry but I can add to this.
The cameras on board are used to track terrorists (hence no registration) but it does beggar the question? Why over your house Matt?
