Not bad for a first DSLR image...

Ok, its not a photo I physically took myself, clearly. However, I did set up the camera and tripod in a very quick rush and my 65 year old mother in law took the photo blindly not knowing if we were smiling, blinking or even looking towards her. We were in such a rush, we had to be at a wedding reception in 45 mins and we still had to drive the kids and grandma home yet, all whilst avoiding the typical two year old tantrums on a hot day!

Much to my surprise its actually a half decent photo. I don't know about the rest of us on here, but I rarely get a full family photo (with me and hubby in it). So i thought i'd post my mother in laws first ever DSLR photograph. Its only taken me since march to get the time to look at it and to add a very basic border to it. Nothing fancy just a nice desktop image for grandparents and myself. Just wanted to share.

I like the photo, the piramid shape of the group and the pleasant smiles of the subject.
I would have preferred the group to be nearer the camera (larger).
I don't mind the off colour border; but, I would prefer the black line wasn't there because it is distracting.
A suggestion for a future photograph could be to have the older boy holding the younger in front of him?
The younger boy looks a bit squizzed in?
Overall it is a very pleasant family photo, so "Not bad for a first DSLR image..."

Great shot ! And I know how hard it is to get a family photo !!!
I agree with zaf. I'd crop it a fair bit closer and lose the black line, plenty of room for that.

Excellent image Sarg, and nice composition.

Reading of your setting up the shot for your M-I-L reminds me of my fishing expeditions with my daughters when they young. I would buy/rig/bait/set the gear but they would reel the fish in, so it was theirs!

Nice shot, and for a change, I don't mind the border. Maybe make the black line thinner, but otherwise, leave this as it is.
