Easter Island revisited

I have been revisiting some of the photos I made on Murray and my trip to Easter Island a few years ago. I have learned quite a bit about processing since then, and am findin gems among what I thought as dross at the time.

The Moai at Tonga Riki. Taken with the LX5. I don't remember why I wasn't using the D200 or D300. Possible the batteries were flat. All the cameras took a hammering every day there.

The first image is very nice, the LE has created very nice interest in a naturally panoramic scene. A few suggestions if I may, the bottom feels a bit cutout, if you do not have any more data down there, possibly cloning out that big rock on the bottom to give the scene some more space could work well. The other aspect is the slight haloing on the hills, it only very slight and most would not pick it up to be honest, however i hate it in my images and now it stands out like tits on a bull to me. Some diligent brightness/darkening adjustment would sort that out.

I do have space underneath, but I want to restrict myself to 3x1 Panoramas at the moment. And I don't have space at the sides. I tried lowering the sky but that looked worse than chopping the sea.

As to the "haloing" it is actually that the clouds are lighter further from the island. So the lower angle is seeing the lighter clouds further away. i.e. It is not haloing but actually what was there. It is visible even in the unprocessed NEF. My processing has accentuated it somewhat though, I was trying to bring out drama in the cloudscape to match the drama in the sea. I am not sure my skills are up to that AND keeping the halo effect to a minimum. A project for next year perhaps. I have printed it at 576 long & it looks stunning.

I like the moodiness of the first image. It looks like a scene from a beautiful film. I imagine it would take on even more drama if printed very large.
