The Europeans - and the USofAans, for that matter - seem to do holidays so much better than we do here in Straya.

Must be because of the cooler climate.

They have had many years of tradition and they value skill and craftsmanship, which today is expensive. When I was a young waiter in Spain I worked at the Palace Hotel and all cakes, deserts, breads, and foods were made in the premises. Nowadays, is generally bought and brought in. We even have restaurants where the food served is made in a central kitchen somewhere.

We have lost so much these days.

The skills of the artisan chefs no longer provide to us those very special pleasures

There is a famous pastry shop/cafe in Valladolid, Spain, which I always visit when in that city. Everything is made on the premises and shipped to all over Europe. The stuff thay make is amazing. Full scale replicas of palaces and buildings etc, all made with sugar! There is actually a viewing area with large windows to enable visitors to view the artisans at work. It's not good for the waistline but like all of Spain, amazing.
