Gamay

We arrived at Saint-Lager in the district of Beaujolais (France). Before entering the winery where we would taste some wines I took this photo of grapes still in their vine. It appear this grape was not favoured by the Duke of Burgundy, Philippe the Bold, who outlawed the grape in July 1395. Sixty years later another Philippe, this time nicknamed the Good, issued another edict against Gamay reasoning that "The Dukes of Burgundy are known as the lords of the best wines in Christendom. We will maintain our reputation". Using the carbonic maceration process with this grape produces a vibrant and youthful wine with undertones of fresh crushed strawberries and raspberries, as well as deep floral notes of lilac and violets.
