This is a very acrtive member of the family it had to be a grab shot, he very rarely sits still for two seconds.

Kit lens at about 70mm Exposure Prog mode (no time to fiddle) approx 100 @ F5

I think I have a problem with depth of field, his eyes are sharp but the rest of him is not. (I focussed on his eyes).

A good pix that captures the moment...... looks like he was about to say something.........F11 or F16 will give you more depth of field but to retain speed you have to increase iso, to maintain shutter speed so you can hand hold ....... down side noise or grain sometimes, or a leg rope on the dog

hi geoff,

composition wise, i would go for a tighter frame, with just the dogs head perhaps, the rest of the image in this case is wasted / uninteresting.

to overcome your DOF field problem, try shooting in A mode around F8 or higher (great for sharpness aswell as increase in DOF.)

The downside is that your shutter may slow beyond hand-holding ability ... in which case you need to enable your flash / speedlite, or raise ISO (im anti-iso so i'd go with the flash.)

Also, are you shooting jpeg / raw? Try bumping your exposure bias up 0.3 or more ... or load a custom curve into your camera if you want some more "brialliance" straight out of the box.

What the others said, but i will add that you did the right thing and focus on his eyes, which is really important when taking candids of animals and people, especially where your depth of field is shallow.

Well done and welcome to the world of D70.

Say something! Looks like the bugger was about to bite.... Anyway, nice shot but a tighter crop would definitely work.

Cheers
