Hi
A few more pictures from my visit to the lakes (must post some pics with the lakes in next time!)
(I think think this one is a bit dark, but I've squeezed about as much out of it as I dare)

I realy like the forth one, but it doesn't do it justice that small, here's a

That last one is great Charlie, there's something eery about that shadow on the right - nevertheless they all look superb.
My favourite has to be the second pic.

Those are great landscape pictures. I would be proud if I had captured those. My favorite is the second one. You can really get a sense of depth on that one.

Nice shots Charlie,
2 & 4 are my favourites, the light is about what I would expect never having been there (only 3 days in London)
Where are the keepers from the lakes? are they browns or rainbows?

I vote for #2! Very good composition and attractive golden hour light and colors

Very nice shots, Charlie. My favs would be 2 & 4, which are terrific images, IMO. Very nicely done, sir.

Thanks everyone. I'm chuffed to bits with the amount of shots that have actualy worked. I though I was going to come back from the day trip with a couple of CF cards full of 'nearly' pictures, guess I must be getting a bit better!
Rick - Every bend we went round whilst driving to and through cumbria presented us with another fast flowing stream/river/large lake, I was desperate to throw a line out over the water but not having my gear with me + the guy who I went with saying his dislike for fishing is only surpased by his sheer loathing for cricket meant it was a no go - another time I hope.

Love the 2nd on Charlie, is there a story behind the placement of those rocks? Looks a bit like a mini Stonehenge.
The countryside looks great. A nice change from the bare paddocks and stupid sheep from around here.

They are all great. The standing stones is really interesting. That last one is sensational. What an amazing place you have photographed.

Rusty - it's a place called Castlerigg, little more info
here, my wife asked me if I had any earee (sp) feelings when I stood in the middle of the circle, the only feelings I had were squishy ones underfoot as I stood in a pile of sheep sh!t!!
Rusty I take it from your Avitar your a Dr Who fan? have you seen any of the new series yet? its pretty good (but not as good as the original, but it never could be could it?).
Killakoala I'm really pleased with that shot, the stones seem to be most peoples favourite here, but the last one does it for me. I've got it on the desktop of my G5 at work, looks peachy on a 23" Apple Cinema Display!
Hope to go back over there soon, it's only 90 minutes away and there is sooo much to photograph. Castles along the Northumbrian coast next though!

JD - These were taken on a magical day for photography, early to mid morning heavily overcast with big dramatic grey/black clouds, mid morning to mid afternoon weather improved, blue sky big dramtic white clouds, mid afternoon to evening blue sky and the odd whispy cloud - but the best and most unusual bit for the Lakes - NO RAIN!
You must have the odd hill/mountain over their don't you?

no rain...
something i hated about the lakes... Sometimes i didnt even take my camera out on a hike for fear of the rain. Something a nice lowepro Dryzone 100/200 would take care of!
Mind you i was shooting B&W too cos i was running a BW darkroom. Would love to return with colour film! Winter was particularly beautiful, one of the lakes (think it was Derwent Water) was completely frozen over! people were out walking on it... Ill try and drag up one of the photos i took of it.

certainly do. getting there is more often than not the inconvience.

Charlie - although all pics are great my favourite would be the B&W. Maybe a little over the top in USM but the darkness along with the stone wall (leading to infinity) conjures up the other side of that district.
I have just scanned some old slides of the moors in Cornwall. The sunny ones are OK, but the dark ones with mist convey the more usual mind’s eye view of what the moors should look like - your B&W has the same effect.

Great photos. There's something about the 3rd landscape which grabs me the most, I think it's the startling contrast of the stone wall/fence that snakes its way through the photo. If you follow it to the right, it leads you into the forest then diverts the eyes towards the mountains.
I like the balance in photo two. The grey sky and far mountains have less oomph in colour and contrast with the rocks and grass in the foreground

They're brilliant

They can't possibly remind you of wales, thats the only place I know of that rains more than Cumbria (with the possible exception of Manchester) and there isn't a drop of rain in sight on any of these pics
If I had more time I would do a tour of you ex-pats home towns and post some images to remind you of where you used to live, maybe one day...

I'm an expat from Oldham (near Manchester, you are are right about the rain) and I really like all of these shots, you've captured the feeling of the lake district. My favourite corner of England, very touristy in places unfortunately.
