Listed above but I will say again as I love this lens - the Sigma 7-200mm f/2.8

I am trying to emulate my 70-200 hero - Kerry :D

Super colours - not just the bird but the branch too. What bird is it?

Grey feathered ass facing deodorising wing sniffing minor I think Soulboy. BTW awesome shot Chris.

Thanks for confirming that marcus - I looked it up in my big book of grey arse facing birds but wasn't quite sure whether it was the deordorising or "'bout time I 'ad a wash" version. ;)

Chris - well done, I especially love the colours :) . Don't you just love it, when bird/s refuse to turn around so you can to shot with your camera head or side on. BTW: You know quailfy to be Kerry Pierce's apprentice  .

Cheers,

It is a good result... I need more of a zoom so how much is it and where in or around inner-city Sydney can I get one???

Bugger!

I have a 28-200 'Koboron' that I picked up second hand - fully manual everything and even better the zoom will slide by itself if not left horizontal  - it's time for a new lens!

Chris,

Great image, and it goes to proive one thing: it's not the gear that makes the photo - it's the photographer.

Justin, how deep are your pockets? :)

If they're not too deep, look around for a pre-loved 70-210. They're very sharp, but not overly expensive. If you need more reach, look for a 70-300, but try to avoid the G, which is not just cheap, but cheep and, in some examples, softer than a down pillow.

If your pockets are deeper, the 80-400VR and/or 70-200VR would be the way to go, but you're now talking 1600 - 2500 Pacific Pesos.

Hi, I would like to keep it somewhere between 300 to definitely less than 500 pacific pesos...

Is the 70-210 a Nikon or Sigma? How much did you pay for the 70-200 sigma?

I've decided that if I go for any lens above 500 it's going to be from the 'people who have bought my photos fund' (current standing at zero and not likely to change)

I don't think I need more than 200mm though (famous last words?)

I think for my photography it's more about using the tele for DOF effects than getting close to a birds arse  and with 200 you can get some really small DOF

Are there lenses that fit Nikon cameras that are not made by Nikon? :)

Justin, the only non-Nikon glass we have in this household is the Bronica glass we have for our Bronica 645. Go figure.

Scout around for the pre-loved Nikkor 70-210 then. It's a great lens, and you should find one (I think) in your budget. What's on eBay ?

I'll refrain from commenting on what you might be able to see with with that 210 lens and a bird's rear end.

Justin,

That's exactly the glass I'm talking about. That looks to be good value.

It does look good - thanks for the search, your help is much appreciated! - on the larger picture I can see sand grains and I'm thinking it's lived it's life on Magnetic island - but I'll keep my eyes open!

Hi Matt

As far as I can remember I used levels, curves and USM

Chris

That is one awesome shot. I can't believe how much detail there is given the fact it had to be dappled lighting yet there are no blown highlights in the sky through the trees. Feathers and branch are so sharp I could cut myself.

Exceptional image - thanks for sharing this one.

Last Sunday these two birds just would not show their best end, so this was the result:-

1/500
f/5
ISO200

Comments most welcomed.
