Yes, he was expressive, but subtle, and fun to shoot. I'd hoped for some teeth and snorting and a big tongue shot, but he wasn't that disgusted with my presence.

Are the people in the horse and cart of a particular religious group? I am only going on the hats and the beards.

Hi Chris,

These people are Amish. The horse drawn cart is as much a symbol of their religion as their attire. They don't believe in modern conveniences such as electricity or automobiles. They still use iceboxes instead of refrigerators, etc.

Dunno that they would know or care about the difference. Most of them don't like being photographed. They get a lot of "animal in the zoo" type of treatment, I guess. Lots of tourists pass through and too many don't show proper respect, as I understand it.

I talked to the young couple that had the horse in the 2nd photo. The woman was very shy. I asked permission to shoot the horse. The man gave permission quickly, with the caveat that he didn't want to be in the photos. They waited patiently for me to finish and when I offered to pay them, they declined. Nice folks, they were. Some others could learn a lesson or two from them....

Thanks, Glen. I plan to go back to Amish country several times this summer. They're interesting people and I hope to document some of their lifestyle in manner that is appropriate.

Was going to say they were Amish but Kerry beat me too it. Haven't you see that Harrison Ford movie with Kelly McGillis. Think it's called Witness iirc.
