Steve - I like the shot but as the other have said maybe a fill flash would have helped. You could also try a gradient mask in PS.

I don't think it needs a fill flash. I think the detail can be seen clearly in the face of the main subject.

While the shadows are a tad harsh, the exposure is good, with no blown highlights. You're well within the contrast range of the sensor here, so fill would have not done all that much for you.
A reflector into the shadows? That would have helped soften the shadows nicely, I suspect. Good image; great use of DoF. Matt ... I was travelling on a bus one time and had a terrible accident: I had my eye on a seat, and somebody sat on it! g.
