Hi Arthur - it is a Eurasian Coot - Fulica atra.
It is found around the world, and is often found near water across Australia. The adult bird has completely black plumage, a white beak and shield, red eyes and black legs. Interestingly, it has flaps along its toe segemts, which help it to swim. This is a link to the site on coots by the Australian museum online - gives some more info. http://www.amonline.net.au/factsheets/eurasian_coot.htm Nice birds huh?
