I know powerlines usually 'ruin' a shot, but I thought I'd try something different and make the shot ABOUT the powerlines

I really like having powerlines in the shot, I feel that sometimes they can help the composition - check some of the images in my gallery, http://www.pbase.com/justin_aus/newtown_and_experiments (wires 1 & 2)

Both of those shots are good, so are your other ones as well.

Great perspective. Did you try the trick with the fluorescent lamp tube under the powerline

You've personified the powerline. Looks reallly cool, wish I had taken this shot.

Powerlines are slowly disappearing underground - care to bet that in X years time folk'll be sharing PS techniques to add powerlines to images to give them that 'old-photo' look?
(The same way we turn everything sepia now?)

Following on re powerlines .. just a question for you guys - just say I'm doing a survey:

Would any of you have any reservations about living near a High Voltage Power Tower? We looked at a house for sale a couple of days ago which had EVERYTHING you could want - even room for me to set up a studio and darkroom (sighs wistfully ... ) downstairs in the self-contained granny flat, plus pool WITH pool house ("as one does" ), 5 bedrooms, 3 car garage, a smidge of water views, play area for the kids and, with a 1000 m sq block, room, room, room, everywhere! My Better Half (I'm feeling generous today ) fell for it HLS and started planning budgets, trips to the bank, paint schemes, etc. HOWEVER, as I pointed out to him, the reason that it was on offer for such a bargain price ($649,000.00 in Lugarno, Sydney) was the HUGE Power Tower that sits on the land - about 20 metres (if that) away from the house.

So - humour me if you feel so inclined just now - and tell me whether you would consider buying a place like this. I am just interested to know what other people think, as research (on the Web) seems to indicate 6 of 1 and 1/2 doz of the other, ie: no conclusive results. BTW, it is not on our shopping list - unless we can either move the house or move the tower. I'm dreaming of my darkroom & studio! (sighs again ...)

Nikkofan - I'm not a kook or conspiricy believer, or anything like that, but I personally think that our bodies are sensitive to many things that we are only beginning to understand. I might be willing to take a chance at my age with High Voltage lines pulsing 50 or 60Hz 24/7, but hey, you've got little kids. Their little systems are more sensitive and each little cell in their bodies is going to live and divide many, many more times than mine will. Cancer?, nerve disorders? Maybe stuff that wouldn't show up until future generations of their childern. It may also turn out to cause growth of more brain cells and make us smarter. I have no idea, but if two properties could offer similar benefits, I would certainly choose the one furthest from the power lines.

One man's opinion. I've worked in Electronics for 25+ years, but it really doesn't help me on this subject. It's just my gut feelings.

Nikkofan - good call. The EMF from power lines is not fully understood or to put it another way, we are not being told the whole story.

NetMagi - love the shot.

Nikkofan - easy fix: move to Queensland. For that money you could get the house of your dreams without a powerline in sight and plnety of cash left over to fit out a darkroom and satisfy your lens lust.

I think SoCal Steve's on the right track.
The truth is, we don't really know - but why take a chance?

Manta - I would move to QLD tomorrow (today if I could get removalists that fast! ) but unfortunately, not possible just now.

Thanks for your responses. I agree totally with what you guys said (and hubby does too, BTW, he just hangs onto the Land Lust longer than me!) Who knows what may show up in time? Too many reports IMHO have shown kids developing leukaemia, etc. As far as I'm concerned, 1 case of cancer that even could be attributed to power towers is enough for me to say (my 3 year old's favourite saying just now) "No way!" Our kids are too precious to take the risk.

I'm just waiting for the "Big Red Ball" (Lotto) to roll over to me - still waiting .... see you in 50 years, still waiting probably! ....

A good call with the house under the powerlines
From a physics perspective, Michael Faraday (1791-1867) is famous for the amazing discovery that a conductor carrying a varying current produces a varying magnetic field around it. I have never done any measurements of high voltage pwr lines, but I would think that this house would be in the midst of a considerable magnetic field. I could probably find out... difficult to say what the long term effects would be on the human body.....
Anyway, I've just bought a house in an earthquake zone, so I'm holding my breath in this regard!
