Hi all,

Went along with a friend to the Punk's picnic in Sydney Park at St. Peters yesterday. This photographer is not a punk, several times asked if from ASIO - I just said I was a cop :)

My first serious attempt at 'people' - they are a lot tougher than 'objects' so any and all feedback welcome!

There are quite a few online at:

Some picks - (please critique)

Justin - there is always something good about a series of pics that tell a story.

My personal critique would be as follows:

#1 I would have focussed on the girls eye to throw more of the background out of focus.

#2 This pic needs a more shallow DOF plus focussing on (perhaps) the girl to the right in the pic

#3 A tad of USM would bring this pic into sharper context

#4 Again in this pic I would have chosen to focus more on the fingering on the guitar plus a contrast boost

#5 For some reason I really like this pic - there may be technical reasons to critique this pic but I just really like it

Remember Justin that my opinions are just mine alone - so please keep posting :D

Chris - when I apply your comments to each shot you have found ways I could have improved all of them - thank you for your valuable, positive feedback.

It's the dabs of colour, the lines from the backlight and the great lens flare that does it for me in #5...

Those pics are really interesting. The hair, the clothes, the attitudes. All well shot. I think you've got the feel or the vibe of the day. That lens flare is fascinating.

Well done.

(PS. In my opinion about Punks. Is it true that these people dress and behave that way so they look different to everyone else. A kind of 'individualism' of sorts? If so, then why do they all look the same? Am i off track there?)

Punks is really about an attitude, there are all sorts of different punks - 'crusty' punks - they don't wash very often so you will know if you meet them. The sub-culture is all about a bit of anarchy and chaos, but mostly in a laidback, get pissed and listen to music sort of way - also a healthy respect for women (from the male punks I talk to), probably because if you don't wash for a month it pays to be nice...

The music is good to listen to, there is a lot of energy when live bands play and they are all interesting because they all have an attitude and stand up for what they feel. My partners son is 19 and plays in a punk band - the house is always full of punks and they are all really good guys.

So in short... it's non-conformity and good on 'em!

I thought that was the procrastinators?
