Having been laid low the last week with a touch of food poisening - yesterday was the first opportunity to get out and about.

This was taken about 8pm last night (BST) from Hungerford Bridge looking across to the Royal Festival Hall on the right and St Pauls in the distance.
Taken with the kit lens, I'm begining to think a decent fast "landscape" lens might now be top priority if anyone has any suggestions.

Sigma 12-24 a great piece of glass..........

Sorry to hear about your bug but a great photo of the Old Father Thames - it’s changed a lot since I left in ’73.

There are 2 lenses that are used by a few of our members - The Nikon 12-24mm DX and the Sigma 12-24mm - I’m one of the Sigma crowd and highly recommend it.

Nikkor 20/2.8, Nikkor 28/1.4, Nikkor 35/1.4 AIS MF or the soon coming "Coke" 30/1.4

Showing my inexperience here but is is there any advantage in a prime lens over the zoom and why would you choose one over the other?

The advantages of the zoom are fast or super fast lens (F1.4 - 2.0) No other zoom lenses have the wide open at 1.4., glasses are of course lot better and far off the zoom, small and compact and true wide angle lens even in lowlight.

The 12-24 lenses start at f.4 and are convenient in the range of 12-24, wider than the prime, even with the 14mm prime.

"Coke" is refer to Sigma

Thanks for the advice guys, I've decided I'm going to make the 20mm/2.8 my first purchase.

The 28mm/1.4 would seem to be ideal for those evening time pictures, though I didn't realise I'd have to sell the house to get one.

Yes, look sad she is, perhaps she thought she's more valued than the Nikkor 20/2.8

She's worth nothing less than a 70-200mm/2.8 VR in my book Birdy
