Great shots Darb. Especially the first one.
Car full of beer drinkers and a kid in the backseat with no seatbelt on...what a rare sight on 4WD beaches.

Glad I don't have to rinse all that salt water out of my chassis..!

nah there were no kids, just a dog (well, 3 of them if yuo include the girls they had, who werent far off it.) ... driver had a beer in hand, pretty irresponsible.

We usually take a few beers in the fridge / esky when we go ... but nothing beyond a few responsible brewskys.

yeah the first oen blew me away , i love it :)

The first one is #$#%$ awesome. The joys of living in the west you get sunset over water. To get shots like that here I need to get out of bed early for sunrise

emailed a local lab (with nice high tech machines, fuji paper and chems.) ... gave them a download location to a TIFF i'd made ... purchased the matte border and frame, put it all together myself, framed it and up she goes!

The first is simple stunning! How did ya do it Brad, what's your secret? Many times I came across scenes like that in real life and wanted to capture it but it's never turned out quite so well as yours did.

Brad - how big did the TIFF file end up being, and if you don't mind me asking, how much did u pay for this great photo to be printed?

print was i think $19 ... frame and matte took total to $50.

Tiff was 32mb ... ive had a few people say i could get away with sending a normal jpeg (with no compression.)

Nothing too special ... it'd been breaking thruogh and then hiding away all day, so i just kept my eye on it ... saw the shot, flicked to RAW, A-mode @ F8 handheld, matrix metering, off I went.

When i converted the NEF, i actually chose AUTO WB instead of as shot, because I think i had "cloudy' set as a WB and it was a bit too warm compared to the actual scene ... likewise the "auto" selection isnt quite exact to the scene either, but not far off, and i dont care, its impressive! :)

I pulled it into CS, boosted certain colour channels, increased contrast a little, raised shadows a smidge, and then sharpened ... oh and levelled / cropped.

Its really amazing the difference the WB change made ... it added colour ranges that didnt even appear to exist!

anyone wanna see the NEF? You'll be surprised how different it looks. (it really looks too warm and didnt show the impact of how it actually looked.)

Im learning more and more that shooting RAW is essential if you really want to work on photos ! (but i shoot jpeg for unimportant shots, or shots where content is important.) and im continually amazed at how much actual information is stored in an image and how it can be modified / translated !

Great shot Brad. I'd be very keen to see the NEF: I've got a bunch of recent sunrise shots in NEF but have yet to get as fabulous a final image out of them.

Where were you shooting, by the way?

Tim

Wow... thanks for posting that. You're right about the difference between the NEF and the final file. It gives me hope for mine! I'm looking forward to getting to work on them.

Cheers, Tim
