Hi guys,

Well this is My First Post.

Enclosed is an image from my favourite Formula 1 team Mclaren. Taken with a D70 with a NIKKOR 70-300 ED Lens at the 2005 Melbourne Grandprix. Note it was taken through a Grill at about 200MM using JPEG FINE mode, ISO 200 on the camera.

Used Photoshop to crop and resize for display on the web, no image manipulations (although it seems to have lost a sig amount of image data in the upload to pixspot).

Am very interested in comments and suggestions to improve , which I am sure there are plenty

Firstly, welcome! Secondly, that's a great shot, especially considering the conditions. My only criticism is that it's not that sharp, but the image still works. Any more from the weekend? I *so* want a press pass to the GP, no more pesky fences!

Great shot; where were you seated to get this sort of view?

The reason the image is a little soft is the lens, btw. The 70-300 isn't the sharpest piece of glass doing the rounds.

I'll post some of my 70-300 shots from the race soon so you can get the idea of how soft the 70-300 really can be...

Anubis, welcome and great shot even with the fence, the fence just takes a little from it.

Hi guys, thanks for the feedback, am enclosing a couple of other photos I took during the weekend, Montoyas Mclaren was taken at 300mm from the Clark Stand (quite a distance from the track and behind wire), whereas the pic below this of the Mild Seven Renault was taken while in scruitineering after the race in the pits.





Speaking of soft images what zoom lens could I purchase that would sharpen up these images cost less than say AUD 1400 and not weigh a tonne (i.e. 1.5 Kgs)....? What are you all using...? PS: The first pick I posed was from about 100 metres from turn 1 on the main straight I took it at Friday Free Practice standing in the rain..... and the name Anubis, one of my hobbies is Egyptology so its from that, although I am also a big fan of sg1!.

Being a Merc owner, I'm a big McLaren fan too. I was in Melbourne 2 years ago to see Coulthard take them to victory and it was a sweet result. Love to get back there soon.

I'm not too concerned about the fences in your photos. It's hard enough to get a clean image even without the fences as your panning has to be spot on. I find I don't even see the blur of the wire and concentrate more on the car detail.

I use the Nikkor 80-400 VR.

Much sharper than the 70-300 - they're really on different planets - and priced just a tad beyond the pricing you mentioned, if you get it imported from HK. See our bargain pages ...

Yes, great shots Anubis - as to a lens in your price range there is always the Sigma 70-200mm

Have noticed that Nikon produce(d) a 80-200 D ED Lens with a constant F2.8 aperture. Do any of you guys have it and still use it? If so do you recommend I get one?. Also, does the lens require a tripod/monopod or can it be used effectively handheld....?

I suppose one of the things that I would like is that for my zoom not to weigh a ton.

The Nikkor 80-200 AF-D/ AF-S are the old production from Nikon, the replacement is Nikkor 70-200VR, you can still buy the 80-200/2.8 AF-D with tripod collar new but the AF-S 80-200/2.8 is hard to find.
