All great shots, but especially the first one.

Hoping that maybe I can get a few more replies and critiques on these pictures besides the one last evening.

 So, stand up at your computer, grab some tomatos and throw 'em at me!

First one I like the best. DOF excellent and the colour contrast between the stamen & rest of flower really imcreases the impact.

#2 I also like. Nice & sharp & good colours

#3 doesn't grab me. The yellow all blurs together - the whole image seems a little soft

#4 is technically fine, but as an image is a little boring - would have been better if all the flowers on the stem were there, rather than just some open.

I'll go pack away my tomatoes now

Thanks, Stubbsy - I have to agree on #4. I was so taken with its strangeness that I overlooked that it was damaged when I shot it.

I will however disagree objectively with number three. You can actually see the slightly grainy texture in the petal and the brown pattern looks like it was dusted with cinnamon and a little spider climbing inside. Subjectively, if you find it boring, then it's boring. Case closed.

I really appreciated your comments, Stubbsy. Thanks for them. :)

Steve

Boring was probably a poor use of words for #4. I guess what I was saying was it lacked punch because of the arrangement of the flowers. Apologies if you took offence as that was not my intent.

So far as #3. I'm now at home and this shot looks better on both my LCD and my CRT (which are calibrated). Maybe I need to take my Spyder to work. On these monitors the foreground petal is distinct from the background one (and I can see the 'cinnamon').

Can I have one tomato back

Nice shots Steve... I particularly like #1. What was the EXIF on that???

Also it's nice to see some species that we don't necessarily have down here...

Thanks for asking, Leek. The Hibiscus in #1 was shot with my Nikkor 105mm micro with an SB-800 held up and off to the side on an SC-29 cord. F/32 @ 1/250. Judging from the other pictures in the series it was probably shot indoors.
