Nice Lizzy shot bp, that mirror lens gives a different bokeh doesn't it & the rubber necks look like they are going on a long journey.

I wonder if they will beat the Hare :D

Mic.

I think the lizard's not happy about having his lunch interrupted judging by his stare  Wow, hand-held 500mm, I'd have no hope of getting a sharp pic at that zoom, you must have good steady hands/technique...

Noticed the background after Mic mentioned it, is that a function of that lens type? Have no idea about the differences, I'll do a search out of curiosity...

Cheers.

With a mirror lens, highlights tend to be circular, a good effect shooting traffic at night, downside of a mirror lens is no depth of field just f8

Manual mode was used, the only control is your speed, easy to do, shoot a general image to get a starting point say at a 400th then 350th and 250th look at the images on your camera screen and work around your best exposure, do 2 or 3 different exposures in raw, the same applies if shooting in the shade but you will be around 80th or 100th all of the above was based on using 250iso.

Test look ajust test look ajust and shoot....... when you have done this once or twice it is easy. Just the same as using a manual camera. Try using your current lenses on manual a good exercise

cheers
big pix PS I only use manual mode. I have shot this way all my life and it is now second nature to do.

Another way I shoot is '1' get a shot and 234&5 improve on number '1' if possible.

This lens has possibly the most annoying and horrible bokeh I've ever seen! Nice pics BP, but the only one I really like is 2 because of the bokeh factor. Sorry! :(

I agree that the bokeh in the first lizard picture is a bit offputting but I find the lines of out-of-focus small circles in the last image to be worse. I believe the donut bokeh of mirror-reflector type lenses arises from the presence of the central reflector mirror at the front of the lens. Can anyone confirm this?

Cheers,

Bruce

The 500mm mirror lens that I have is about 18 to 20 years old, the technology of that time period produced some nice pieces of glass I must admit I do tend to agree with you re the bokeh, but it is still quite sharp and does work well with some backgrounds, as I have only just dusted it off I need to do some more testing re the bokeh.
