went fo a walk along the beach and breakwall at newcastle yesterday and luckly i had the camera with me. The surf was quite big but not the greatest day for photo's cause it was overcast and hazey. Anyway this is a couple of the good ones i managed to get (4 out of about 80). the photo's where taken off the southern breakwall with the D70 and 70-300mm lens at 300mm, shutter speed was about 1/800, f6-ish ISO200









any comments and suggestions are welcome

I would say that they are pretty spot on, maybe a little dark for my tastes but I suppose thats a matter of preference. Shame to not have a few extra mm's on the lens as a tighter shot would have been awesome, especially when the 2nd guy is catching some air!

Great shots - brings back some fond memories. I would agree that tighter would be better and to that end are the shots above cropped? much??

If you could crop tighter without much loss of quality I think your shots would have alot more punch.

Great timing on the images though. Were you shooting continuous?

yeah we all wish for a few extra mm's

in hind site i probably could have gotton a little closer by moving up the breakwall but the waves where breaking away from the wall so i didn't want to get 'behind' the action. I was pretty happy with most of the photo's considering it was a first attempt - it is a fairly common surf spot when the swell is up so i will definatly try again.

It was also quite glairy so i was wondering if a polarised filter would have been useful here?

James top shots. i like the last couple as it shows a bit of action and yes these dull days a bit of a bugger and well we make do with what we got but yeh well done.

no cropping - that was straight off the camera - but i will have a play with cropping them.

some where shot continous and others where just single frame. It was a bit hard cause there was quite a few people out so you have to pic the ones with that crazy look of no fear in their eyes cause they are the ones which pull off backflips and the like.

How do you get on with the 70-300? It's definately going to be my next purchase but I am not sure if I should go for the G or the D. I would prefer the ED glass in the D but if your shots are with the G then I might have to re-consider!

Cropped, sharpened a little and smudged the guy in the background. What do you think?

Lens if 70-300mm ED. I think it is great. i only have it and the kit lens and use the 70-300 for stuff like this but mainly bought it for shooting birds and as long as you arn't too far away it does nicely especially considering if you can't get as close as you like you can still crop and get a really good pic. But i have also seen some very good pics from the G lens.

I bought the ED lens becasue the guy in the photoshop convinced me it was a much better lens and i decided that i probably won't notice much differance at the moment cause i am just begining photography but it saves me upgrading to a better lens in a year or so time and at the moment i couldn't ask for much more from it.

Your crop does heaps for the shot. The image seems to be massively more dramatic (excuse the grammar!) plus I would be interested to see what you could do when the guy comes down in the 2nd picture.

The lens looks really sharp, I believe that the G gets a little bit softer at 300mm so the extra money is probably worth it although I don't own either yet!!
