Candids of a sailor taken last week. Both with a 500mm F8 mirror reflex lens.

Very difficult to take a shot closeup with the 500mm lens as the DOF is very shallow. I focussed on his sunglasses and his nose is out of focus. How shallow is that :?: :) :) :) And i took the photo from about 10 metres away. Looks great printed.

That first one is a terrific portrait... The second is really 8) and I like the reflections in the sunnies...

Wow, F8 and the DOF is about sunglass depth  Gee you'd have to be spot-on with your focus... Were you 10m away on the first or second shot?

Steve, you are the master of mirror lenses. Portraits with a 500mm mirror lens. Mate you are a legend, both came out well.

Yeah, reflections on sunglasses just made whole picture. You don't need to know who the author is, you don't have to see the first photo but in this reflection you clearly see - it's a sailor

Very, very good

Cool shots Steve - the 2nd, with reflections, is great, even with shallow DOF.

Steve

Extremely well done. The reflection on the sunnies in the second really makes the shot. Not sure if I'd noticed the shallow DOF if you hadn't highlighted it. Have you shown the result to the sailor in question?

Stubbsy - The sailor (subject) in question was absolutely delighted with the pics :)

Mudder - I was 10 metres away for the second shot. I was hiding behind the 'Potato locker', visible in the reflection, but i cloned myself out :)

Thanks guys

Steve,

Isn't against security protocols to take a big Russian onto an Australian warship???

Or is OK now that the cold war is over?

Edit: Or is it Glen that owns the Russian mirror lens. I'm getting confused, see my sig for explanation.....

:) Glen has the BIG RUSSIAN. One of my juniors is a russian though.

My 500mm lens is a Nikon F8 mirror reflex.
