People relax and the camera loves it!
This one taken with a borrowed 50mm f/1.8
I cropped as in the original I aimed a bit high...
So comments?

1. I like it.
2. The subjects - or as others might say, the people - look relaxed
3. The 50mm 1.8 is a lens to covet, methinks, or as Birdy would say "I lust the lens"
4. When you have 3000 x 2000 pixels, a bit of cropping is no problem
5. Matt will be positively orgasmic that the main subject is smack dab in the middle.

This image demonstrates the power of direct eye contact. It would not have worked otherwise.

I'm thinking about going straight to the 1.4... one less lens to buy that way...
But I will own one of the two... amazing lens... just makes things punch!

What is the difference between 1.8 and 1.4 - is it a whole stop?
The 1.4 is $550 or so, the 1.8 is $240. The price difference is a decent chunk of change.

When I look at the optical profile on the maxwell site (lets see if I can hotlink)
1.4:
1.8:
Its just more glass!
Plus buying the 1.4 now means I will not buy the 1.8 now and the 1.4 later!

Exactly....I'm going through that exercise as we speak. I bought the 70-300G zoom in June and I think it's hopeless especially from 200mm out.
So now it's on to the 70-300ED, which I've demoed and is much better.
Same sort of exercise with fiters. Santa's coming early here.

Excellent depiction of the physical difference - yep, it is a lot more glass in the 1.4
But - extra glass notwithstanding - is 1.4 to 1.8 a whole stop? What do you get for the extra $300? More glass, yes. But is it the difference between 1/30 and 1/60? I am interested.

The difference between f1.4 and f1.8 is not a full stop. Frankly, it's not worth the extra unless you do lots of very low light photography.

You guys shoulda been contemplating this a fortnight ago - I would have been able to bring home cheap cheap glass for all... from the US.

Responding to Allan a couple of posts above.
I thought that the 70-300G and the 70-300ED were basically the same lens. Ken Rockwell has a (slightly eccentric) review of both of them on his site.
I don't know if he is full of it but he certainly sounds convincing and has some nice shots on his site.

I agree with this... thats why I bought the G type lens..
they have (AFIAK) exactly the same optical profile except the ED lens has one ED element and its not a critical bit of glass...
while some (Gary) will disagree I have no probs with my G lens and it is not duplicated by anything I have or want
What will replace it is a bit of fast long glass ($$$$$$$)
for when I am rich (Hell I'm still a student earn bugger all!)

If this the case then TSA and Customs will have a good look at you, 1 x D70 with 10 x 70-300G lens, then who's going to bail you out huh?
