Tried my hand at concert photography for the first time. Damn it's hard!!

Here are 2 keepers from about 30 taken:

Used Nikon 50mm1.8.
Both shots where at ISO800, f/1.8, no flash, handheld.

PP included:
Cropping
Noise removal (with Noise Ninja)
Sharpening (with High-Pass Filter)

Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks embi, looks great!

Didn't even think of trying B&W. It brings out the detail in the face, not like the flat red in the colour version

What was the process you used? (no idea when it comes to B&W)

Did you shoot in raw?

I'd like to have a play with the raw file

I love these shots. But I must say Hame's treatment is perfect. The shot is now finished and ready to frame!

embi: i did shoot NEF, i'll PM you a link with the NEF file.

Hame: the problem is it makes the muso look like his face is sunburnt compared to the rest of the body.

Beej, don't you think concert lighting can give this effect? I like hame's effort. In fact I prefer it to the original, but please no offence intended,
just personal preference

marcus, none taken :) the more i look at hame's version, the more i like it.

hame, the gig was of a reggae band called Skanknation at Tresellies Nightclub in Katoomba. Yesterday was the Winter Magic Festival up there.

Well i hope you had a good night up there 8) but i think it must have been a bit cold up there as his face is pink but his hands now look cold and a bit yellow (i am sure it is the light and i wonder if some one from this forum can with out too much trouble make his hands look more like his face in colour )

I agree that concert photography is not easy, but your two pictures capture the atmosphere. The first one is a bit soft, maybe it'd worth to increase the ISO and close down the aperture at f/2.0 (wide open, f/1.8, this lens is a bit soft). The second one is nice too but moving a bit on the left, if possible, would have perfected the composition (the micro in the singer's left cheek is a bit distracting).
