We can see that you are getting results with the AFS 300F4. You don't need to use TC with Silver Gulls. Just a suggestion or two. Try taking with the light falling directly on the gull or use flash to bring out the details on the feathers. Noticed you got "cross wings". Most bird photographers will advise you to avoid that. Keep iso to 200.

yeocsa/Arthur: I was actually at an observation bay at the end of one of the main runways at Adelaide Airport trying to shoot aircraft taking off, when these guys came along. I just panned the camera and shot.

Well done for a snap shot. Try without the TC. You will get a noticable sharper images. Keep it up.
