Is it just me or is there a halo around the bird? also is that a common sparrow? I'm no ornithologist.

It is a sparrow, not sure which variety.
Edit: House Sparrow (Male) I beleive.

Nice subject and well seen. I like how the colour of the background matches the bird's colouration. Maybe the head and eyes need a bit more sharpness and lighting.
