My first ever waterfall pics with the D70.

Some critique or suggestions would be welcomed. I struggled with lighting conditions here because it was hot at the top and dark down the bottom. This lead to a bit of overexposure at the top. Hard to bring it back.

I like them.. well done. I've often tried to get the smooth silk effect but i've never been successful. It's great you had the exif data there.. i'll have to experiment more the next time I see a waterfall or something.

Thanks geoff. A tripod is a must, but it was pretty easy to gte the effect going. BTW - These pictures were taken in 2005, i just stuffed up the date setting on my camera.

When I saw "Gibralter Falls" I thought the war had started again. Nice images by the way.

On the road out near Corin dam. About 25 minute drive from CBD. Some nice subjects out that way. Badly affected by the fires though. Just starting to green up again. Also - falls are much better after good rain.

Yes mate - Its a script I have for PS CS2. I downloaded it off another photography site i frequent. I P.P. then resize to under 800 pix wide, and then run script. It adds Exif and (C) info, date, border and reduces resolution to 72dpi for web. A very good script, saves a lot of time. Let me know if you want the DL address.

Nice shots, the third is my favourite.....probably works best because it lacks the sky. Did you use any filters to help with the sky?

No i used no filters in these shots. Im interested to see if members have any suggestions for filters. Do you think a ND filter would have helped?

Some pretty nice silky water shots there Willy W...

ND or even CPL filters might have helped you get a couple more stops in the same light (and therefore more silkiness)...

However these are pretty good and better than my first efforts at a waterfall...

I like water shots and enjoyed these, well framed, I particularly liked the second one with the foreground rocks taking a good strong interest...

Sometimes it's tricky with any direct light on the highlights of the water, you can bracket the shots and merge in PP to help sometimes (or you can bracket using use the same NEF just exosed with two EV levels into two images).

The ND filter will lengthen your exposure time (how much depending on the strength of filter, like ND8 for example) and not affect the colours, a CPL will also lose at least a stop of light and also make the "depth" of some foliage colours and the colours in wet rocks stand out more, might give more colourful "contrast"... CPLs are very handy, use them a fair bit...

Damn! I forgot to include the link doh! Just thought it might be handy as it shows the differences between shutter speeds and the effect it has on the water flow etc... Well worth a sticky I think...

Thanks for the filter tips. I have a circ pol but didnt thnk to use it. Not yet equipped with a ND filter. I will keep saving. I need to buy a macro lense first.

The study you have posted is also quite interesting. 1/200 shutter speed looks quite different to 1 second.

I found the photos well-exposed and the highlights didn't bother me at all. Nearby Canberra, Gininderra Falls has a great waterfall too but it's a bit more to reach it...

I would definately recommend a tripod and CPL filter. They really help with waterfalls.

John thanks for that link. There are so many posts on this site it is hard to find the info at times. I will try my next lot with a CPL.

Cheers for positive words Link. I will have to look Ginindera falls up on the map for a shoot. With all this rain perhaps it would look good on the weekend?

It would look great for sure, but it'd be wise to check if access if possible on foot first... Last time I went there (2 years ago) I remember I had to swim to get to the nicest waterfall! Not something to do in winter
