Thanks Chris, and Piro, Those splotches on the red are not in the original photo that i uploaded so maybe it's the compression of the jpeg and they really stand out . Oh well have to live with that.
Thanks

Yes Birdy it works ok, who would believe you could do this with one of them when they talk about how slow they are at times, ok sometimes it can be but i dont seem to have an hassle's with it.

BBJ,
Few people got the 80-400VR, did not think or have a real taste or put a good use of/ to it and they always wish to have something better and better.
Look!!! many 80-400VR owner produces a great capture or stunning shots from this lens. Even if they have the 500 AF-S, they still want something more, and it's the sickness sympton of "LUST".

BBJ out of interest what modes do you use?

AF-S or AF-C?
Single or Continuous Shot Mode?

Holden, don't worry it won't stop there. I have 70-200VR with TC, and I still want more reach :)

Very nice photo BBJ. All the bike shots you post here are just amazing. Have you ever thought of sending these to any Aussie Bike Magazines or perhaps even some Bike Retailers ??

IMHO...the lens is only as good as the photographer. When the skill of the photog is held back by the compromises of the lens, then it is fair to blame the lens. However, in quite a few cases, I feel that the photog tends to blame their tools before they'll blame themselves.

In your case, it seems you have that lens well and truly under control :-)

Great job !

I totally agree Dave in regards to that. I don't blame my 70-200VR as it is a good lens for a lot of things. However at times I feel that you can't just move closer to a subject as they sometimes tend to move also, usually ten times as far as they were before you started moving closer. Others who travelled to WTP will vouch that reach is an issue.

So there're many options for you outthere kipper!
500 AF-S/ 600 AF-S or full range of Sigma zoom upto 800.
Then what's next? I wish they have 1500mm

very true Daryl. I guess in these instances, you can only capture what the world gives to you. My Sigma 70-300, not being a fantastic lens by any stretch of the imagination, often surprises me - but there are always times when I hit 300mm and think "damn, I still aint close enough" - I know what you mean :-)

At the end of the day, if you the photographer, gets everything correct to give correct exposure, but the lens lets you down because the aperture will only go down to f5.6 (for example), and you really need f4 to make the shot, or you need an extra 100mm to get closer, then I think it's fine to blame either the lens, or the situation.

I guess that's what makes a keeper, a keeper. When it all comes together at the same time, you end up with a great result. If it doesn't, you end up with a "Hard-Drive Filler"

Hi All, Thanks for the coments but this is a usual picture for me as i take up to 300 shots at a meet like this.

Kipper i always use AF-C Continuous Shot Mode when chasing these beast as they do put in a great rate of knots. Lat weekend i even took some in Manual focus just to try it out and is of if you are going shoot 1 corner.

My Sigma 70-200 F/2.8 is also a nice lens and the focusing ring on that is in a nice spot, i can zoom with 2 fingers and use 1 finger for focus at the same time if need be.

Holden, this is a nice lens ok a lot of people say it is slow as i have said before but once you know what it can do it is a great lens. Ok once in a while it might hunt but who cares, it works well.

Dave, i have contacted them but as they already have there photogs who they use, they will get from them and well we are country track and well dont get a lot of publicity. Although it could change soon mayeb as we have been told that they are going to hold the 2006 National Historic Racing Championships. I do sell a lot of photos, well it has it's moments but yeh to shops i guess who either sponsor riders or riders themselves and have gone to shop in Tasmania and around Melbourne, i have a regular shop in Adelaide who buys as well so i save this and it helps pay for more stuff.

I guess i know these lenses i have are great but, i do get the odd OUF shot so i would say for me and what i do most of a faster lens would be what i need. I dont know if it the D70 that may reflect on the speed of focusing and i guess it would on some lenes, and well reach is not a bif drama but i have seen a few 300mm F/2.8 lenes used by other photogs but coupled to a D2h or alikes. I dont know if this would be as good on the D70? Who knows, when will be more than satisfied with what we have already????

Well just got home from work better see if the lawn mower will go, if not too bad.LOL

Cheers
John

BBJ I have to agree with you. I have the same lens and it is not too slow for most motorsport work. I also use AF-C and set the camera to continous shooting mode. This was very successful at the recent Qld. Rally at Imbil.

Ok oneput, yes i have also found the AF when used in Dynamic area which i dont use, as i did a test with this mode and well i dont like it. Found some of my shots to be OUF in this mode so i use single area and dont seem to have any probs and if i do get a few OUF shoyts i mostly my fault as i am hitting the shutter before letting the lens to focus.

Now Dynamic mode is suposed to be for moving objects but i have not had any luck with it, maybe it's me but thats the way it seems as i use the same main settings and 1 day decided to give that a go and was not happy with shots, so i changed back and things was good.

But it pays to play with these things as there is still a lot i haven't played with like bracketing and so on.

Cheers
John

G'day mate,
Saw BBJ so I had to check it out and another great shot... Your bike shots are always good, I enjoy 'em, and wow that rim IS close to the black stuff

Thanks Mudder, well i can tell you it doesn't stay on the ground that long as i have other shots that when he powers on with this new bike of his he has to literally stand over the tank to hold it down, but he is a good rider.
Thanks
