Ben,

Looks like you're getting the hang of it, as you say! Panning is a curious beast, as you have to get the shutter speed right for motion-blur without compromising too much on the optimal aperture... then get the focus right! Tough gig! The 24-120 VR performs optimally around f/11 plus or minus a stop or so; for mine the Holden1 and TKelly shots are the best. :)

MCWB, does having the AF on continuous help for panning?

Shots are looking very cool.

The only thing that I would suggest is making sure the front of the car is in focus - not the back. (I'm not a pro sports photog so don't consider me a guru or anything)

Continous is fine as long as you pick focus-priority release (not sure if that's an option on the D70).

Catcha: you've done really well for a first attempt. For inspiration, have a look at F1 magazine for good examples (especially the first few pages). Fool around with shutter speed for effect, and watch for compostion (the background in particular).

EDIT: to add to what Heath said, the entire car should ideally be in focus. Try increasing the shutter speed.

Yeah catcha, I think you have done really well. I like the last holden shot and the crossfire.

If your lens focuses fast enough, then yes. If not, you'll be hunting for focus all over the shop and miss the boat; pre-focus is your friend in that case.
