If you make the size such that it isn't necessary to scroll to look at it, everyone will be extra happy.

Figure everyone has min 1024 x 768, if you make it, say, 800 x 600, it should fit like a glove

Even though 1024x768 is a general standard these days, apply the logic of between 700 and 900 as the highest width you ever want to go.

While I'll argue that most people surfing this forum, and most places in general on the web, have at least 1024 x 768 running, I'll bet there are a few with 800 x 600 still there, so there's your safety zone.
