I'm not usually a huge fan of the practice of adding colour to a black & white shot just for the sake of it... however I think it works nicely in this case.

This shot was taken this morning at a house fire which destroyed a house in Spring Hill, Brisbane. For those of you interested the job required 4 pumps (501A, 501B, 502A, 502B), 2 aerials (502J, 502L), 1 command vehicle (501T) and the SOC (BO11).

I like this picture a lot, even if it might be a tad disturbing.

Mind you, while I'm really over that whole "black and white with a touch of colour" thing that people seem obsessed with doing, I think it works really well in this one and actually like it as a result.

I don't think, with the exception of absolute black and white, that the colour would work better for it than what it's at now.

I hope that people find it a bit disturbing... it means that looking at the shot is creating or reliving an emotion.. which is exactly what i want.

The full colour version doesn't seem to have a punch to it as there are far too many distracting shades in the wood and in the background...

I'm with you... b&w with colour has become an obsession for people... but I think if it's used to portray a strong message it works...

full b&w of this shoot looks really good printed imho... but not so great on the screen. I will be printing a 20x30" of this in plain b&w to go in the studio.

I think this is one of those images where the B&W with a splash of colour works well... The stark old gate(?) with the warning draped over it is a very compelling image... Makes you wonder of the consequences of the incident...
