I don't mind the crop but I'm no cropping expert as well. Maybe try a portrait crop.

There is no glass there. It was removed the day before and that part of the zoo was supposed to be closed to visitors.

Had a look at cropping the bird in a 2:3 aspect ratio (so vertical/potrait orientation). Looks good but it would of been better if the bird was looking away from the perch.

Zeb, I like your crop of the bird. I like the dof and the bird looking back at the perch.

Maybe with the critter you could have zoomed in a bit closer. You could do it with a crop but you'd loose quality.

Cheers :)
John

Nice shot of the parrot. For the cropping, Id try and get it so that the wall to the left is missing, possibly a bit more space off to the left, and then see if I could get part of the wood (the top edge?) leading in from the bottom right-hand corner.

johnd: unfortunatly that meercat was taken with a 105mm macro lens because my only other option was the 70-300G which i am not happy with at the moment (soon to be replaced with a 80-400 vr) so it is allready cropped quite alot.

robboh: sounds good i will try that next time i am at home

Your crop of the parrot was good IMHO... nice lead in along the branch

Thats where I was going with as well, but trying to get the branch to lead in from the corner more.

I've just had a go at what I was thinking of and it just doesnt work as well as the way Zeb00 has done it. He's got the bird nicely positioned regards 3rds. I found that to make the branch lead in right from the corner cramps the bird too much in the corner and makes the branch too prominent in the pic in 3:2 ratio pic. You can do it in a 4:3 (or a square) but Ive personally never liked the 'feel' of those ratios as much as 3:2.
