these were taken whilst walking along a walkway by the river nearby
These wrens and silver-eyes are very hard to photograph cos they keep jumping around and moving constantly. unfortunately there are branches etc out of focus causing some haze in foreground

The key with the small birds is patience and learn their habits. You'll still probably lens restricted. Although you have the 80-400VR which gives you 60MM more than what I've got. With the wrens I've found watching how they feed is a good idea. I watched them come from their safe zone of the trees, perch onto wooden posts or barbwire then down onto the ground to feed. Everytime somebody came they'd fly back to the safe zone and repeat the process of perching and flying down to the ground. I managed to position myself 5-8M from them in some long grass and sat there for an hour. Managed to get a few good shots off before the light started to get too strong. Best bet is early in the morning as they come out a fairbit then. Also you might get a bit lucky and have one perch right beside you. It does happen from time to time, you just have to be patient.

In addition to his excellent camera skills, Kipper's comments reveal the real recipe for his great images.

Nice work Avcomp - looking forward to more. I'd be posting more bird shots myself but it's next to fruitless with the lenses I have. Did you hear that SANTA???!!!!

thanks for the tips daryl,

I have noticed that these smaller birds get used to me being around and come closer, but in this area I think people throw things at them and are wary of people.
I would like to spend time concealed but I have already been rousted 2 times by the cops, so naturally am a tad wary of making it 3 times. (even took a shot of the police chopper after I was sure that they were satisfied that I didnt have a gun.)

Will have to find somewhere around here where that isnt going to happen.

when rousted by the police, they came up to me and asked me what I was doing.
When they saw the camera and I showed them a few shots, they were happy and left me alone.

I am assuming that the camera and pod might look like a gun from a distance and that someone called them up.
They could also just have been doing random patrols and seen me.
who knows??
