this is made with my nikon D70.

I like a lot!
The mood is certainly set by the b&w. Has a very medieval feel to it.

This is a superb photograph that has the right balance of light/dark, with superb curves and a mystery that is timeless.

the mood of the shot is excellent, it's very mysterious.
the shadows and tone give it a real dimension
I guess you know the guidlines of composition, since i see some elements lining up in the corners, well done
maybe experiment with depth of field in a high contrast scene see if that adds more depth to the image
please post more images of your wonderful Gent or Belgique
I was there it's a very beautiful and charming place.

Jeroen - One of the finest first images I've seen posted.
You might consider just a little use of the Shadow/Highlight control in Photoshop CS to add just a little more in the shadow areas to make it even more involving, while leaving the highlight sliders set for no change.
Excellent shot under difficult lighting.
