Took some surf shots today (first for many weeks) at Coolangatta on the way back down the coast to the Jewel of the North Coast, Woolgoolga!

Glen, thanks mate, just a common garden Tamron 70-300mm variety, I would like a nice 300 or 400mm Nikkor glass (and SB800, D2Hs, D2X, 600mm sports pro lens, clubsport Holden, beach house at Burleigh Heads......) but alas, their aint no money for things like that, 4 teenager kids cost money.

However, even a cheapie lens works well if you're patient!

Hey BP, where is Blue Bottles? (GC is a big place) We've often eaten at Pelican's - Broadbeach (inside Grand Mercure Hotel), havn't been there for several years now but they had a superb seafood thing going...

Now its comments like this that make it hard for me to justify buying the 400mm f2.8 Nikkor and the 600mm f4 nikkor !!

Excellent shots again Max. We will have to catch up some time for some surf photography. It's an old passion of mine that your brilliant shots are stiring up.

Were these shots cropped much or are they pretty much as you shot them? BTW I saw your pelican on the beach print in a home and lifestyle expo up here in Alstonville a few weeks back - pretty good exposure of your work. Well done.

There is Max and others on this forum who have posted pics taken with lenses that, to put it mildly, are deemed inferior by others.

Max - your pics are always awesome - save your money - you make your Tamron sing :D :D

Good point Chris, I definitely would have better lens if I could afford it but at this stage in life, my kids/schooling etc are the priority. Some "ordinary" lenses can take some pretty good images in the right hands. :D

Thanks Jordan, didn't know the photo went that far up the coast!

The shots are fairly heavily cropped, I couldn't get real close yesterday as it was too cold (OK, I'm a woos but being from Woolgoolga it's cold when it's under 21C)!

Would be happy to hit the coast one day and photograph a few waxheads!
Maybe we could organise a d70users surf photo day? I'm sure Bigpix and maybe others from GC would meet us somewhere for a few hours picture taking and coffee??? Any ideas?

Cheers, Max

Max, any more shots like yours and we will have to remove the under rated tag from all of the flavours of 70-300

Actually Glen, the lens looks cheap, feels cheap but takes some pretty good shots...I defintiely might invest in a 50mm lens tho for portraits.
