Went outside to throw the rubbish out and noticed a hole in the clouds where the moon was peeking through......so of course I bolted inside to grab camera & tripod.

Here are 2 of the better ones:

Thought I'd share :-)

Dave

Nice pics - prefer the first - more clouds apparent so more atmospheric PS> Are you married? If so, why are you puttin out the garbage?

I like the centred composition of the first one better... I thought about doing the same thing but it's freezing in Sydney!

Do you have any pictures close enough to see the craters?

thanks guys.

Stubbsy - I am married, which is why "I" was taking out the garbage

Bloop - unfortunately, I was shooting through a layer of clouds so the moon isn't very detailed when highly cropped (which is what I need to do with only a 300mm lens).

It was also cold down here in Melbourne, but I figure you have to take these opportunities when they arise. I thought about just going back inside where it was warm, but the little voice inside my head kept saying "you'll be thinking about the shot for the rest of the night, wishing you had taken it".....so I did.

Crazy ? YES. But who of us here aren't crazy when it comes to our beloved camera ?!?!?

I took a shot with the same lens a couple of days ago and yes you do get to see craters fairly well. I'll have to play some more with apertures though as my shot duration is too short really - which is giving me grain problems.

Hi Dave, love the look of the moon through the clouds! :D
You prompted me to test out the Sigma@270mm, hoping to see some difference although it didn't look too disimilar to the shot I took with my Nikon 70-210mm awhile back. :)

Paul, what were your settings used for your shot? It looks quite detailed!

G'day Dave,
Cool moon shot, really like the atmosphere the clouds add... Might be worth a try with some added contrast on the moon itself? Prefer the first shot, more moody...

Jase, good shot mate... Clear and detailed...

F5.6 @ 1/100sec - 300mm. I'm still playing with the camera and trying to work out what works - I've only had a digital camera for 1 month so it's all new. I tried a few moon shots tonight but getting shakes on my tripod. Unfortunately the tripod's a fairly cheap video tripod so shorter than 1/50sec is fine - anything longer is just a blur.

Thanks paul. I thought maybe you had it a little faster. I shot mine 1/400@f/8 ISO400. My tripod wobbles around abit too and I have to wait til it settles to trigger the remote.
Update: Just tried 1/40@f/32-too soft. Looks like the principle regarding focal length and speed still applies that being focal length at 300mm should equate to shutter speed 1/300 or more there abouts. Oh well, having fun learning.
Cheers, Jase. :)
