I love my 80-400 VR.... Moon shot!

I realise this isn't a great shot, but it's pretty cool to be able to get this detail and sharpness without a tripod.

I just pointed the camera at the moon.. hand held.. and took the shot.. Exif data is:

Iso 800
Manual Mode
Aperture, F7.1
Shutter, 1/60s

Shot is cropped to get rid of all the black sky hence the loss in some quality.

Obviously, the original is much better quality.

just for my understanding, why didn't you shoot it at iso200?

Because the shutter speed probably would have been too slow and VR probably wouldn't have helped..

I could have experimented and POSSIBLY used iso 200.. I just wanted to try a shot without much fiddling too see the advantages to VR.

You are using a 80 - 400 VR and you dont have a tripod?

Not a bad effort really for such a big lens and at that shutter speed.

Nice shot but you need some sharpening.

Also, why didn't you just lower the aperture and lower the ISO with it?

Actually, the original was sharp as a tack. It lost a fair bit in the cropping, and conversion to jpg.

I suppose I could have lowered the aperture, but isn't the sweet spot a little higher than the lowest setting.. anyway, . If I truly wanted a great shot, I would have played a bit more, but I was just amazed at what I could produce at a whim shot.

Geoff,
You should not regret to be the owner of that lens! I still have mine and going to keep it!

I'm puzzled. From memory, I shot my moonshot a couple pf months back, handheld, @ about f/8, 1/400, ISO 200, and same lens.

Don't be puzzled.. this is me we're talking about.. I just assumed it wouldn't work at 200 so I tried it at 800.. no fiddling, or experimentation was done.. Had I purposely tried for a great shot, I would have experimented more :)

Then your course of action is crystal clear, my son. :)

Er, moon.

Nice shot Geoff. You can see that its sharp in the original coz of the detail in the craters at the top. If you are shooting the moon, try and keep the shutter speed to a max of 1/100s. Any slower and you will start to get slight blurring due to the movement of the moon itself.
