I had a wonderful time at the weekend, Sam bought me a lovely polariser filter and organised some terrific days out.
Would appreciate your comments and critiques of these shots and also any hints and tips for using a polariser.

The polarizer filter seems to be vignetting some images
it's a surreal effect, makes them almost look nostalgic, as if they were taken on an older camera.

I like the 3rd and 4th image.

Matt - great pics but same remark as Glen - the last pic is superb with the reflections

I've just been reading that with wide angled lenses, these were on the kit lens, the polarisation can become uneven. SO I think that is why I am getting the polarised area in some of the shots that looks like it's tilted off centre. When I was rotating it, it would make one area nice and dark so I rotated more and the effect was lost.
Also just been reading about the effect being strongest at 90 degrees to the sun.
Oh well, it's still a magnificent filter, love it. WOuld you recommend getting one for every lens in the arsenal?

I enjoyed the shots as well.

If you plan to use a CP on all your lenses, including future purchases, I'd suggest buying the largest one you can afford, like 72 or 77mm and then buying step-up rings to fit the various lenses.

But it looks funny on his 50/1.4

Matt, that CP was a gift but they cost money I would buy them for lenses you think you will use in situations which demand it. Eg I don't have one for my macro and couldn't afford one for my big russian

Nice shot Matt, yes you have to roatate it a bit to get it in the right spot but you will sort it out and i like the last few shots well done.

#1 - probably would have looked better without the CP so you didn't get the darker middle in the sky. Othwerise my third fave of this bunch

#2 - clone out the bird & straighten the horizon (NOW! ). I found the shadows from the bridge a little distracting on this - I'm guessing this was shot late in the day - again I think this would have been better without the CP

#3 - My second fave. I like the composition and the touch of vignetting around the opera house works well. CP made a difference to this one IMHO

#4 - falls 1/2 way between #5 and #6 and fails for me - sorry

#5 - I like the composition on this one, but think the shot would be stronger with a little less of the dark foreground to draw me more to the boats

#6 - my favourite of the bunch. The reflections are superb and the colours nicely muted. Maybe try cropping out the buoy on the LHS.

Thanks for sharing these. Have fun with the CP (BTW I have one - a 77mm and use it on my 12-24 and, occasionally, on my 70-200 VR - some day I'll get one for my 24-120)

Bloody whales!! We spent the best part of 2 hours looking for the damm things and then when we found one, all he did was come up for 4 gulps of air every 4 minutes for another hour!!
Still, it was fascinating to watch and great to see but would have been better with some breaching or tail dives.
