Sub Sections

Hi all, Just a quick note to say thanks to everyone for participating in the original thread "What The?". It certainly generated more debate than I had anticipated.

To those I did not get back to (ie Greg & Stubbsy to name a couple) I am sorry. The thread accelerated so quickly I could not keep up. I was also busy yesterday and did'nt get much of a chance.

I understand most of the opinions expressed and take onboard the points that different people have made. I acknowlege that agree or dissagree everyone has a right to thier opinion. Just as someones opinion of an image may differ to someone elses.

Perhaps sub sections under "Image Review and Critiques" like Children, Sport, Abstract, Landscape etc would mean that people could view a topic they were interested in and therefore be more likely to comment on. It would also not annoy the people who don't want to see snaps of the latest addition to a members family.

Thanks to all again, and I promise this is my last post on the issue.

I just want to say I would like to see subsections as well. I went looking for examples of others macro shots this morning and as I was scrolling through heaps of threads I couldn't help thinking.....now, if there was a dedicated macro section I wouldn't be doing all this searching right now.

Your thread did get quite a few bites ... I think a few people get concerned when people do not reply to their images ... I owuld not take it too personally though ... I for one am not gong to comment on every image that comes onto this forum, I do not have that much time!

A consideration though ... dividing the critique section into subsections is not the answer to this problem ... I think that you need to divide the work into users levels and then encourage the more senior workers to critique the work in that section. More importantly though, workers in that section should keep the number of images to just a couple a week, in part to give people a chance to keep up while at the same time ensuring eveyone gets a turn. As workers reach a competent or higher level they would be encouraged to go into an open class. Expert workers may have there own class if they are really keen.

Yes, but who decides the levels?

Me, I just want the subsections so it's easier when searching out a particular type of image.....so that's probably me being a tad lazy.....and yes, there can be issues about some images fitting several sections....so what's the easy answer....damned if I know.

I think if you aren't getting the amounts of feedback or the right type of feedback you were after then just ask for it.

Might go and bugger off now, nothing above seems to make much sense.

I don't agree with this, it will eventually cause more harm then good.
Wether we like it or not a lot of us will feel that we belong in a higher level then we are given and that will only result in a "us and them" attitude.

Subsections however, I think do have some merit.

With all due respect ...

Marcus has raised an issue, but I have yet to see where the problem lies, except perhaps that some people expect to see critiques posted for every image that they post.

Forget it. It will not happen.

Let me put this another way: nobody has, as yet, clearly defined to me what the problem, if there is one, might actually be.

The "problem", as far as I can see, is in some people's perception and/or expectations.

Again, it's a critiques section. It is specifically for images to be critiqued.

End of story!

And FWIW, the software doesn't support subsections, so let me now please put three things to bed.

There will not be a happy snaps section.

There will not be sub-sections unless and until the software we use supports it.

Images posted for critiques may or may not have follow-up messages posted. That's the way it works, and if you don't like it, tough.

Move on; there's nothing more to see.

On the subject of sub-sections: I frankly believe there are far too many sections to the site as it is. To add more would impede rather than assist the enjoyment of this informative and entertaining resource.

One way of having a Clayton's subsection is what they do in the images section of the French equivalent of us. If you don't understand French, basically they have a 'consolidated ___ thread" for many topics, e.g. birds, panos etc. It makes for great viewing. :) Not sure it's needed here (yet), but it's something to consider.

Marcus, on the idea of subsections without the need for sub-sectioning - could be achieved if people clearly label a summarised description of shot in the subject line (eg. walnut macro, uluru by sunset, happy childing playing, etc) instead of using the subject as something to entice people to look (eg. what I shot today, etc).

I'm with Sheetshooter - there are too many forum sections already, we should cull those that don't get used. And some of the stickies could be de-stickied too, as they refer to info out of date. For a newb to come on here, they would be far overwhelmed by the amount of info and some (re)organisation could hopefully restore sanity.

This forum's a year old, maybe with the official namechange (DSLRusers), it's time to critically examine at the existing setup/structure.

I have no issues with this.

For out of date stickies, please PM your favourite mod with the link, and they can move the message to the archive areas.

Likewise suggestions for culling sections.

One suggestion I would have, if a "restructure" is to take place (and if current software allows) isa slight change to the Recent Topics view.

As we all know, the "50 most recent posts" list often only goes back a few hours. If you skip a day or two of reading the boards, the only way to catch up is to go through each section individually.

I would love it if the Recent Posts section was not limited to the top 50 posts, but instead continued back into the past, giving "Page 1, Page 2" etc options at the bottom.

If I am not explaining myself clearly, here is a similar example:
http://forum.ski.com.au/ultimate/ultima ... =get_daily
I *think* that how far back the list goes, is changeable in a person's profile preferences, but am not 100% on that.

Just a suggestion. :)

Rae (& anyone else that has the same problem) - here's a tip if you have a permanent broadband connection:

I use the RSS feed link on the home page to keep track of which posts I've read and which I haven't.

Just download a newsreader such as FeedReader or Thunderbird and link it up to the URL of the D70users RSS feed.
It will then take a regular feed of the last 15 posts and will build up an "Inbox" of all the messages over time. You can see which have not been read and can sort by date or topic, which makes reviewing large number of posts a breeze...

It's pretty simple technology (which is why it's called Really Simple Syndication) and fairly easy to setup, but feel free to give me a shout if you need any further pointers / help...

Thanks for the tip, Leek - will give it a go and will shout if I need help.

Cheers

I use "View Posts since last visit" which appears in the profile area in the top left corner of the home page. It will show a list of all topics updated since your last visit even if it was months ago. I work my way through this and then only use the 50 recent list (top righ corner) to catch up on posts that happened while working through the posts since last visit list.

Peter,
Posts Since Last Visit is useful, but if you can't make it all the way through the 453 messages and have to return to some work or something annoying like that then the Posts Since Last Visit resets to zero. While you can get around this, I always forgot and found this really annoying.
The RSS feed doesn't have this problem... Now, I only miss things when my broadband connection is down... (or when my builder switches the power off without asking )

Thanks for the suggestion, stubbsy. I actually do use the "View all posts since last visit" exclusively, as I find it the easiest way to access this site, but I have the same problem as Leek re not reading them all... as well, I access the site from my work computer, then when I get home it has of course reset again... no biggie, but mildly inconvenient.

Perhaps RSS is the way to go - I am setting it up now and am interested to see how convenient it will be.

Yep - and then when you've setup the D70users RSS feed, you can add RSS feeds from your favourite news sources and blogs, thereby ensuring that you have an adequate supply of interruptions to your daily work...

With regard to work / home connections, RSS won't really help there, but I just try to remember the time of the last entry that I read at work and continue reading from there when I get home...

Rae & John

I'm with you on the reset of posts since last visit. Annoys me too when reading at work & at home. Guess there's no solution to that.

the answer is simple really - you have two options:

1. Never ever leave your computer
2. Employ someone to keep an eye on the site and tell you any interesting things you should know
