Is the colour banding in the first shot a result of the JPG conversion, or sensor overload???

No jpeg effects.. mainly lens effects....

You weren't looking in to the eyepiece at the time I hope?
I am no expert but that could be dangerous.
D70 can be replaced your eyesight is Irreplaceable PS
I am not trying to be rude or smart and I am sure you already know but just in case.

I was at an eclipse of the sun once with a friend and I was surprised by what people did :shock:

hehehe.. yeah I know..
The sun was no where near its full intensity, it was very close to the horizon... bright enough to well and truly saturate the sensor but quite comfortable to look at, especially at wide FL's

These images kind of burned my eyes looking at them.

There WAS a lot of contrast :)

And yes, my patented saturation boost
