a picture of speed

ok its been a while since I posted a picture and my camera's still in the shop getting fixed so here is one that I took a while ago.
To take this one I held the camera on top of the car when I was driving (not for the faint hearted).
Obviously it is totally over exposed, with highlights blown to buggery but I thought the effect was kind of intersting.

..... interesting effect........ you can get this effect by using a zoom lens, slow shutter speed and zoom backwards {from tele to wide}, to get slow shutter speeds ND filters are a must, exposure would be trial and error as I have not done this for many years......
Do I dare ask if you droped your camera?

Interesting effect Jonesy, like it! Reminds me of those 'zooming' pics; I think the overexposure can be forgiven in the name of art.
[Edit: damn, gotta be fast around here!

although overexposed I feel this adds to the feeling of speed. the driver's car is well defined. doesnt' seem to be very overexposed, although my eye isn't great. the stark contrast adds a surreal affect to it. very cool shot. it would be interesting to see a regularly exposed shot but my guess is it wouldn't have the same effectiveness.

This should go into the crop of the week for what kind of car. At the least I like the experimentation which is what I find I am venturing into, as I get more comfortable with the controls. Capturing the feeling of speed in a static photograph is a good goal which leads to some challenging output. eg; the challenge 5 shot of the lorikeets wings

big pix: I didn't drop the camera from the car (but it did suffer a little fall from my camera bag which may be why it hasn't been focusing well lately)
Dargan: i reckon someone on the site can guess the car. There seem to be a few car buffs amongst us and my car is pretty main stream.
Thanks for the comments guys.

You guys in Australia are lucky that your steering wheel is on the right side of the car. I'd have a heck of a time getting to the shutter release from the left

Curiously, just last week, on the way over to Briddog's, Leigh was shooting some images from out of the top of the SLK. This was during the evening - it was dark - and from what I saw, a couple looked quite good.
Hopefully he may add a couple of them to this thread.

Possible, but somewhat unlikely.
The car is obviously a convertible, and drivers of BMW convertibles rarely know how to operate the controls that retract the roof. Either that, or they're afraid their hair will get messed up.
I can't think of another reason why one sees so many BMW convertibles with their tops up.

Dargan, spot on. BMW E46 320i.
Not a convertible. I'm not a fan of paying $30k more for a piece of canvas. I just had the camera on the roof and held it though the window.

ajo43,
Have you checked the scratches and dents on the roof?

I'm impressed with your sense of mis-adventure.
