AW - Australian Heritage Fleet Visit

PostPosted: Sat Aug 06, 2005 4:20 pm

Well we had a great time at the Heritage Fleet this morning... I could have stayed there all day taking photos... Thanks to Sheepie for organising that...

All the volunteers there welcomed us warmly and didn't mind having their photos taken... All were willing to chat about what they were doing and why... We were taken on a tour of the workshop and shown all the various boats that they maintain.

We were then let loose on the wharf and boats for a while to do our own thing...
After that, we donned hard hats and were taken on a tour of the John Oxley - a large steamship that they are restoring... An enormous restoration project.

Photo opportunities were everywhere and I've posted a gallery of my better shots - no detailed PP yet, just web processing...

Some of my favourite shots are:

I think it could be good to keep all photos from this sesion in one place, which is here.

That was a great event. Weather was just right, site workers open and a lot of opportunities to find good subjects. This guys do fantastic job on this ship. I would like to see it once will be finished.

Thanks againg to sheepie for organizing and taking care.

Here comes my best shots. Sorry for large number. It so difficult to cut it down ;-) For your info, most of these shots were taken with 104/2.5 AIS and some with 50/1.8AFD and 28/2.8 AFD. Please click thumb to view larger format.

K.Polak

Some nice shots Kristian...

It's good to see other people's takes on the same location... I shall have to go back there one day - there are so many excellent subjects there...

Looking forward to see others' shots.

Before I put up some of my pictures from this fantastic morning, I'd like to thank those that came for the effort they made, and the way they conducted themselves - well done, I'm sure the guys from the Heritage Fleet appreciated our interest as much as we appreciated their time :)

Leek - I really like your Grinding shot - light, framing and timing all work together well :) (I tried a couple of times for a similar shot, but my timing was really bad - by the time I got into position he stopped grinding!)

Kristian (krpolak) - Your closeup shots in particular are great - as we discussed on the day, it would be nice to just wander around there for a day taking this sort of shot. Looks like you have a good eye, it was good to meet you :)

Looking forward to other shots from the morning from you two, and the others that came :)

Now - my shots (or at least a selection - I'm about half way through basic PP'ing, will do more later and then spend a bit of 'quality time' on some that warrant it)...

Mostly taken with my new Nikon 12-24DX - which I gotta say was ideal for the mostly enclosed conditions of this shoot :) :) :)

Compressor House:
Image
(This is housed in a standard container - there's a couple of these containers, one used as a workshop and this one for the compressor, etc.)

Manual Work:
Image
(Taken with the 50mm 1.8 8) )

Rivot Oven:
Image
(They heat the rivots up in this - unfortunately, they weren't able to do any Hot Rivoting on the day, as the compressor failed :( )

Undercover Coal:
Image
(How cool is this! Tiny area, and look at the great metering system at work! Minimal Post Processing)

Leek sticking his head in:

..And what was inside:

Another example of Nikon metering with SB800 fill:

Thanks for organising it Sheepie... Please convey our thanks to the guys down there if you contact them...
I might pop down there again sometime... they didn't seem to mind us walking around the open areas and there are SO many subjects waiting to be photographed...

I was there too :-)

It was a great day, thanks again Sheepie!

The boats viewed, stories heard, sights and sound of the ship yard, just wonderful.

Here are a few of my shots, too many to process at this time, no PP other then scaling and border. More to come over the week.

Grinding a piece to shape
Image

Some more shaping, but different scale

Cleaning and greasing some old parts

The back of the John Oxley looking at the ... in the background

Lunch time :-)

Got lots more of the shipyards and boats, the people working there were also an integral part of the outing, lots of great stories, all of them very passionate.

Cheers,

André

G'day Heritage fleet goers :)

Looks like it would have been a fascinating place to visit, and great to see the old skills haven't died out yet...

Thanks for the posts of the great images, now I know it would be a terrific place to wander around in and hear the stories...

Cheers.

OK - have finished basic PP'ing on all that I intend posting now, and have uploaded them to my smugmug gallery:
http://sheepie.smugmug.com/gallery/713570/1

Some of the more interesting new ones include:

and...

(Available light, tripod mounted - 5sec f18 ISO200 12-24DX @ 16mm)

There's a few that I intend to do a bit more work on (these have really only been converted to jpg before uploading) - I'll post these once I get them done :)

What an excellent bunch of images, everyones is so impressive I doubt anyone will go there after this posting, for fear of not being able to do it equal justice. Great shots by all, it really is an industrial spot isn't it?

Yeah, it's a really cool spot.

I reckon an interesting way to explore it would be to assign each member of the party a different lens to use exclusively, and see what they come back with:
eg: 50mm, 12-24, kit lens, 70-200, 35mm, etc.

There's so many different things to take in, and a challenge like that would create some interesting perspectives on it all :)

COME ON GUYS THAT HAVEN'T YET - LET's SEE YOUR PICS!

I really enjoyed looking at all of these pics. There are too many favourites and it looks like you guys had a great time. It's also interesting to see each person's view. Thanks for sharing.

I dont know how this part is called in profesional language, but it a bottom part of yacht fin. There were couple yachts beside the site. Nobody wandered there ;-) BTW, quite a few good shots have popped up till now. I like Sheepie's 'Undercover Coal' and other one with boat. And yours 31068351-L is interesting as well.

Looks like all of you have some winners. A great subject very well photographed. That NIKON quality seems to shine through in relation to the exosure and flash control.

Regards,

K.Polak PS: I like your shot. Well balanced sky gives impact for the ship. Also mess around seem to support solid fuselage. This photo shows very well feeling about the site. The only thing I would critique is that whole image leans toward left side.

Just something a little different. This yacht was being restored as well.

And the most photographed vessel on Saturday morning:

I will add some more later.
